Hot, humid weather can make a loft feel uncomfortable even when the thermometer does not look extreme. Ventilation helps remove heat, moisture, dust, and stale air, but more wind blowing directly on birds is not the same as better ventilation.
Check airflow at bird level
Observe the loft at different times of day. Where does fresh air enter? Where can warm, moist air leave? Are vents blocked by dust, feathers, storage, plants, or temporary coverings? Does a fan or opening create a direct high-speed draft across perches or nests?
The correct design depends on the loft. Use the owner’s established setup and qualified building or veterinary guidance rather than copying one vent size from another property.
Find moisture sources
Look for roof leaks, condensation, wet bath areas, spilled drinking water, damp litter, and poor drainage outside the loft. Ventilation cannot compensate for a continuing water problem. Clean and dry affected areas safely and repair the source.
Watch the daily heat pattern
Sun exposure, roof material, shade, bird density, and overnight cooling affect loft temperature. Keep drinking water available and check birds more often during difficult conditions. Avoid making major untested changes that could reduce predator protection or weather resistance.
Know when behavior is concerning
Open-mouth breathing, weakness, loss of balance, collapse, or other signs of distress require immediate action and veterinary guidance. Move a bird only in a way that is safe and appropriate; this article cannot provide emergency treatment.
